By comparison to your brakes or suspension, the humble filters in your car don’t seem to carry too much importance.
But the condition of your fuel filter, air filter and cabin filter can have a surprising impact on vehicle performance.
This article describes the function of your fuel filter, cabin filter and air filter, and answers some common questions.
What is a fuel filter?
The fuel filter is responsible for keeping dirt, rust, debris, sediment and other contaminants out of your fuel lines. It does so by trapping particles before they reach the engine, where contaminants can do major damage if they become trapped in the pistons.
A clean fuel filter means that your car will continue to consistently burn fuel well. A clogged fuel filter may result in decreased fuel economy and compromised engine performance. In extreme cases, the engine may consistently stall and switch off soon after being fired up – or fail to start at all.
For this reason, it is essential to keep tabs on your fuel filter.
What are signs that my fuel filter needs replacement?
If you notice that the engine is sputtering, lagging or performing inconsistently, your fuel filter may very well be the cause. Don’t ignore the warning signs. Failing to replace a clogged fuel filter can result in a clogged fuel injector – an expensive repair that will see your car stuck in the driveway!
What is an air filter?
The air filter prevents any particles or contaminants from being sucked into your engine. These particles may (a) cause damage to your engine and (b) impede the performance of your car.
What are signs that my air filter needs replacement?
When the air filter is clogged, your engine needs to work harder, reducing fuel economy and power, and creating more emissions. Another big indicator of a clogged air filter is reduced acceleration capacity and a decreased throttle response.
What is a cabin filter?
As the name suggests, the cabin filter takes care of the air quality inside the car cabin itself. It traps pollen, dust and dirt particles, preventing them from entering your car through the air conditioning vents. Many drivers take the clean air inside their car for granted until the cabin filter is clogged!
What are signs that my cabin filter needs replacement?
A dirty cabin filter will cause unclean air to be pumped into your car. If you notice yourself sneezing more than usual inside the vehicle, you may have a cabin filter problem! A clogged cabin filter can lead to under-performance of the air conditioning system and reduced air flow from the air conditioning vents.
How often should I get my filters replaced?
At Express Auto Inspections, we undoubtedly recommend the regular replacement of your filters to maintain safety standards. This is important not only now, but into the future when you may look to sell your car. But the exact time period for filter replacement will ultimately depend upon the car model and filters fitted, as well as the amount of driving the car does.
All the information on the recommended replacement schedule for you air, cabin and fuel filter will be available in your manufacturer’s handbook. And if you want a second opinion, take your car to your local mechanic for a service and inspection!
